Islam’s Condemnation of Crime and Murder in Society - A Response to the February 2009 Article in Philadelphia magazine entitled: The Radicals Among Us - A public session was held by our brother Abul-Hasan Maalik Ibn Aadam yesterday, February 22nd 2009, at Masjid Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhaab in Camden NJ in response to the article printed in this month’s issue of ‘Philadelphia’ magazine, wherein the author: Michael Teague stated in his article entitled, “The Radicals Among Us”:

“And then there’s the matter of money - specifically, Saudi money, according to Philadelphia police. The complexities of Middle Eastern religious politics are many, and vast. But it’s clear to authorities that Saudi Arabian extremist groups - namely, Wahhabis and Salafis, sects that seek to bring about the return of an Islamic empire - recognize angry young American prisoners as easy targets, and pour money into radicalizing prisoners both during and after their incarceration. “[T]he immense wealth associated with extreme Wahhabism/Salafism makes the religion appealing to inmates, according to a 2004 study by the U.S. Department of Justice.”

Abul-Hasan proceeded to answer the erroneous claims above, in addition to clearly laying out how the Scholars of Saudi Arabia and the Salafis has continually condemned violence, terrorism, murder, drug trafficking and more.  Amongst the points covered were:

-  criticism of the article, “The Radicals Among Us” written by Michael Teague for ‘Philadelphia’ magazine, through the principles of honest journalism, including ethos, pathos and logos
- a clarification of what is Salafism and their stance towards violence, extremism, crime and murder
- An accurate history of what is termed, “Wahhabism”
- Verdicts from the Scholars of Saudi Arabia in unequivocal condemnation of violence and terrorism
- the role that various forms of inoxicants and drugs have played in these recent crimes and what Islam says about substance abuse and drug trafficking
- The position of the Salafee Scholars concerning co-operation with the authorities in crime prevention, including terrorism, hijacking, kidnapping and bombings
- A reply to the erroneous claims of many journalists that the Muslims, especially the Scholars of Saudi Arabia, have not condemned the terrorist acts committed in the name of Islam
- Shaykh ‘Ubayd al-Jaabiree, a Saudi Arabian Salafee Scholar, condemns the recent bank robbery and murder of police that occurred recently in Philadelphia, PA and describes such conduct as savage behaviour
- King Abdullah’s advice to the people and Scholars of Saudi Arabia after the terrorist events of 9/11
- A call to return to the Scholars of Islam, the people of knowledge, in such affairs

Review:

An emotionally inspiring khutbah on the topic of brotherhood, the blessing of it, the vital important of it and the destruction of division and separation amongst a community. The second part of the khutbah mentions some key points that will preserve brotherhood and stamp out disunity.

Allaah, the Majestic mentioned in his Noble Qur’aan,
The believers are nothing else than brothers. So make reconciliation between your brothers, and fear Allaah, that you may receive mercy. (Al-Hujurat 49:10)

“Brotherhood is more precious than anything on the earth…who said so Rabbul-‘Aalameen….

And He has united their (i.e. believers’) hearts. If you had spent all that is in the earth, you could not have united their hearts, but Allaah has united them. Certainly He is All-Mighty, All-Wise. (Al-Anfal 8:63)

..if we recognise that brotherhood is this precious, then we must be ready to stand up and defend it in the face of every troublemaker and every haughty arrogant individual who tries to ruin it. Why should we stand in their face? Because they are doing the devil’s work!! As Allaah said, ‘The devil is the one who is intent on sowing the seeds of hatred and rancour between you’…so whoever  tries to ruin Islaamic brotherhood then we have to stand in his face! Because he is doing the devils work whether he is pleased with this or not!

Why does the Devil want to destroy this brotherhood?

…that is so precious and valuable, brotherhood that if we lack it we will be weak,  brotherhood if we are without out, we will be susceptible, brotherhood if we are without it, we will never achieve anything. The Shaytaan is aware that if there is no brotherhood, there is no community, if there is no brotherhood, there is no cooperation, if there is no brotherhood…there is weakness.”

Personal problems wrecking brotherhood

…many of us may be sitting in the audience today who have a beef with a brother or a problem with a sister and when we are advised ‘Fear Allaah ‘O Brother’ then we say ‘you don’t know what he did to me’ or we reply ‘well that’s the way I feel’ and some of us go further to an affair that is even more dangerous saying ‘this is not the code of the streets’, put that under your shoe ya akhee! Put that under your shoe ya ukhtee! Because we go with the Sunnah wherever it is…have you entered into Islaam completely or do you only pick and choose…but when it goes against your soul you resemble the rest of the people of innovation!

Pardoning and forgiving

“A Jewish women brought a poisoned sheep to the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and he ate that poisoned sheep…some of the Companions brought that woman to the Messenger  (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and said ‘should we not kill her?’ and he said ‘No’ so who are you  Abd-Allaah or Amaatullaah, when you are asked to forgive you say you are unable? You not only harm that person (who you hold a grudge against) but you harm yourself!

Are you upon the way of Hammad Ibn Zaid, Hammad Ibn Salamah, Al Awza’ee, Ath Thawri, and Imam Malik, And Abi Ishaaq Al Fizari, And Ahmad Ibn Hanbal and his contemporaries and his school, and upon the way of Bukhari, Muslim , Abu Dawuud and their brothers?

Are you upon the way of Abdullah Ibn Ahmad, and Ibn Khuzaimah, and Ibn Battah, And Al Laalakai, and the upholder of the Sunnah Al Ansaari?

Are you upon the way of those who were from Baitul Maqdis: Abdul Ghani, Ad Diyaa and Ibn Qudaamah?

Are you upon the way of Ibn Taymeeyah, Ibnul Qayyim and Ibn Abdul Haadi?

Are you upon the way of Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab, his students, his children and his descendents?

Are you upon the way of all of these people- in your stances and your writings- and your lectures in conquering innovation and annihalating it and warning against it and its people?

The present situation proves the opposite of that.

Notes: That was an extract of what Shaikh Rabee’ asked some authors who say that they are Salafi yet their stances do not show such. And these are questions that every Salafi should ask themselves and what everyone should ask about others who claim to be Salafi.
