| Who is Salmaan al-Awdah? He is upon the misguided ideology of Ikhwan al-Muslimoon and its figurehead Syed Qutb - he is a political activist. Most major Sunni/Salafi scholars have refuted him at some stage (such as Al-Albaanee, Ibn Baaz, Ibn Uthaimeen, Muqbil bin Haadi, Rabee’ bin Haadee etc). Shaikh Ibn Baaz requested the religious authorities in Saudi Arabia to prevent his lectures from being distributed and that he be prevented from misguiding the people. He has visited the UK a few times and Yasir Qadhi (in opposition to the Scholarly rulings) was his chief translator - Qadhi introduced al-Awdah as a true scholar. Salman is known for his strange and deviated rulings, such as participating in the innovated, misguided celebration of Eid Milad an-Nabi (the Prophet’s birthday) alongside Sufis.
Grand mufti rejects Salman Al-Oadah’s fatwa

| JEDDAH: Celebrating birthdays and wedding anniversaries has no base in Islam, Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Alsheikh has said.
The mufti made the comments while answering a question from Al-Madinah newspaper after prominent Qassim-based scholar Salman Al-Oadah issued a fatwa saying that celebrating such occasions was not against the rules of Shariah.
“Such a call is against righteousness. A Muslim should thank Almighty Allah if his children are healthy and if his married life is stable as the years pass by. He should say: Alhamdu Lillah for His generosity and kindness,” said Al-Alsheikh, who is also the chairman of the Council of Senior Scholars and the head of the Presidency for Scientific Research and Religious Edicts (Dar Al-Ifta).
Speaking on satellite television last week, Al-Oadah, who is the general supervisor of the Islamtoday website, created controversy after ruling that there is nothing un-Islamic in celebrating wedding anniversaries and birthdays.
“It is normal for a son or daughter to celebrate birthdays. They can invite their friends for a meal on this occasion. I see nothing wrong in this,” he said.
Al-Alsheikh, who is the highest religious authority in the Kingdom, said Muslims only have two official celebrations — Eid Al-Fitr, which is celebrated at the end of Ramadan, and Eid Al-Adha, which is celebrated on Dhul Hijjah 10. He added that Muslims also have a weekly Eid, which is Friday.
The mufti said that the celebration of other occasions such as birthdays, wedding anniversaries and mother’s day were un-Islamic.
Several prominent Muslim scholars have supported the mufti, adding that celebrating such occasions is in imitation of people of the Jewish and Christian faiths. |

MAKKAH – The Board of Senior Ulema dismissed the idea of determining the beginning of Ramadan with astronomic calculations without visibly sighting the month’s crescent, Al-Madina reported.
The Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Bin Abdullah Aal Sheikh, said astronomic calculations are based on mathematical equations and are not acceptable in terms of fasting. He said the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) Hadith of “Fast at its sighting” and the one of “Do not fast until you sight it” were clear and decisive. READ HEAR

Lectures from the Recent Unity Conference in NJ:
Inshaa` Allaah, we will be presenting the lectures delivered at the recent Unity conference held at Masjidul-Bayaan, Asbury Park NJ. The first lecture is presented by brother Aadam Lazarus, a recent graduate of the Islaamic University in al-Madeenah.
The Unity of Ahlus-Sunnah in their Position Against Ahlul-Bid’ah - Our brother, Aboo Ramlah Aadam Lazarus bases this reminder upon a lecture delivered by Shaykh Rabee’ Ibn Haadee entitled, “The Correct Position Against the People of Innovation.” The speaker first defines who are the people of Sunnah and who are the people of Bid’ah (innovation), then he speaks about some of the Salafee brothers who are negligent in dealing with the people of bid’ah and who are put off when topics of manhaj are discussed. Towards the end, the speaker brings more benefits from the speech of Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Haadee al-Madkhalee, such as the claim that refutation of the people of bid’ah must come from a Scholar only and other doubts.
Keep checking www.SunnahAudio.com for more lectures…

Informing The Authorities Of Terrorist Plots.
By Abu Khadeejah Abdul-Waahid bin Saaleh
The Salafi position regarding those who incite or plan terrorist acts such as suicide, kidnap or bombings is that Muslims should inform the authorities of their activities. This is regardless of whether these acts are perpetrated in Muslim or non-Muslim countries. Muslim communities must be at the forefront of stamping out these non-Islamic acts that are done falsely in the name of Islam. The Messenger of Allaah stated: “Whoever sees an evil, let him change it with his hand. If he is not able to do that, then let him change it with his tongue [by speaking]. And if he is not able to do that, then let him [hate it] with his heart, and that is the weakest of faith.” (Reported by Muslim)
The Scholars have stated that forbidding with the hand is done by the governments and the authorities, so they hold and punish and imprison the evil doers. If they withhold from this duty, it does NOT fall into the hands of the citizens to take the law into their own hands. Rather they remain patient. As for speaking against the evil in terms of refuting the false ideologies, then that it for the scholars and the people of knowledge, not for ignorant, and there has never been a time in the history of Islam, except that the scholars have spoken out against evil ideologies and doctrines as a safeguard for Islam, and this will not stop up until the final Hour is established. As for the general person then he forbids only in accordance to his knowledge and ability in line with the rulings of the true scholars of the Sunnah based upon the Qur’aan and the Sunnah. As for hating with the heart, then this for the one who recognizes evil, but does not have the knowledge nor the ability to speak against this, so he distances himself from it and keeps away from it. So as it relates to the terrorists, then it is known by the one possessing knowledge as well as the one who is devoid of it, that these acts are evil and condemned by the Muslim scholars based upon the texts of the Qur’aan and authentic Sunnah. So both, the one possessing knowledge and the general person, informs the authorities of those that incite or plan terrorist acts.
And this is from the aspect of forbidding evil and thereby earning the reward of Allaah, the Most High. Indeed it is a distinguishing trait of this nation that they enjoin the good and forbid the evil. Allaah states, “Let there rise from amongst you a group that call to good and they enjoin the good and forbid the evil. And indeed they are the successful.” (Qur’aan 3:104) Indeed nations that came before were cursed upon the tongues of the Prophets due to them not forbidding the evil when it appeared. Allaah, the Most High, states, “Those amongst the Children of Israel were cursed by the tongue of Dawood (David) and Eesaa the son of Maryam (Jesus son of Mary), because they used to transgress the bounds. They used not to forbid one another from evil which they committed…” (Qur’aan 5:78-79).
So Muslims should take heed from this great verse. Additionally the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu alaihi wassallam) stated: “There are not a people amongst whom sins are committed, and they are stronger than those who commit them yet they do not prevent them, except that Allaah sends His punishment upon them all.” (See Tashabbuhul-Khasees of adh-Dhahabee, and the hadeeth is authentic) Another reason why these terrorists and their ideology must be stamped out is due to the fact that they are innovators who have attributed to Islaam, that which is Islam is free of, and it is impermissible to accommodate them or defend them or protect them, due to the statement of the Prophet (salallaahu alaihi wassallam), “Whoever innovates or accommodates an innovator, then upon him is the curse of Allaah, His Angels and the whole of mankind.” (Reported by Bukhaaree and Muslim). And there is not a shadow of a doubt from an Islamic perspective, that these terrorist ideologies are innovations and these perpetrators are innovators, and it is not permissible to protect them or give them refuge.
One can recognize the ideology of the these evil doers from certain matters that their lectures and discussions always revolve around, from them is that they always call for rebellion and revolution in the Muslim lands and against the Muslim rulers; they declare the Muslim rulers and those who work in the apparatus of government to be apostates and unbelievers; they praise the suicide bombers and terrorists and insurgencies in Iraaq, Palestine and other places and continually justify their actions; they may praise the bombings of 9/11 in New York, 7th July bombings in London or the Madrid bombings. These discussions of theirs may not necessitate that they themselves will organize or carry out terrorist acts but this speech of theirs incites others towards violence. Remember it only takes two or three young men (or women) who have been affected to go out and wreak havoc. The Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu alaihi wassallam), mentioned these renegades (known as the Khawarij) in a narration, “If I am alive when they appear, I will slaughter them with the slaughtering of Aad.” And Aad was a tribe mentioned in the Qur’aan that was punished by Allaah for their evils and transgressions. He also stated, “They are the worst of Allaah’s creation under the sky.” There are many, many other narrations of the Prophet and his Companions describing them, to the extent that Shaikhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah and Imaam an-Nawawee, two great scholars of the middle ages, stated the consensus of the great Scholars of the Salaf and Sunnah that these renegades must be prevented and fought against. In fact Shaikhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (died 728 AH) stated that the Khawaarij are more harmful to Islaam and the Muslims than the Jews and the Christians. And this is due to the fact that these Jihaadis, Takfeeris and terrorists are a cancer within the ranks of the Muslims, destroying the purity of the Religion from within.
So when one looks at the activities of these people such as the killing of men, women and children, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, one sees that they are indiscriminate in their murderous acts. After what has been mentioned above one can see why the Scholars of this noble and blessed Salafi da’wah have issued verdicts calling people to inform the authorities if they know of anyone inciting or planning terrorist acts.
There is NO doubt that those make a link between terrorism and what they term as ‘The Wahhaabis’, intending by that the Salafis, have made a mythical link based upon fallacies and falsehood. The great Scholar Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhaab (died 1206AH), after whom his adversaries invented the derogatory term ‘Wahhaabi’ for anyone who studied his works - then this Scholar was the most fervent in his opposition to deviation and deviant ideologies. Rather the Salafis, whom the opposers term as Wahhaabis, have been at the forefront of combating the takfeeri, Jihaadi and Khariji ideologies, for decades. And this refutation of the Salafi scholars upon these groups was not just a mere response to modern-day events but rather a religious obligation upon them regardless of prevailing circumstances.
So Syed Qutb, the father and reference point of the modern-day Jihadist-terrorist movements, was refuted by the Salafi Scholars for his call to assassinations and violent revolution decades ago and again in the early nineties by the likes of the Salafi scholars such as Shaikh Bin Baaz, Shaikh Bin Uthaimeen and especially in great detail by Shaikh Rabee bin Haadee al-Madkhalee who authored several books in exposition of Syed Qutb. Shaikh Bin Baaz warned and exposed the evil doctrine of Usamah bin Laden back in the early nineties, whilst the Islamic political groups were in praise of him. Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi is another reference point for the modern day violent politically motivated groups, yet the Salafi Scholars such as Shaikh Rabee al-Madkhali, Shaikh Ubaid al-Jaabiree, Shaikh Hammaad al-Ansaaree exposed his errors and warned against his approach. Another example is the warning of the Salafi Yemeni Scholar Muqbil bin Haadee against the HAMAS of Palestine whilst the latter were supporting terrorist attacks on civilian buses in Israel. We also have the Scholarly Salafi stance against Hizbollah of south Lebanon and former leader of Iran, Khomeini such as the statements of Shaikh Bin Baz, Shaikh Bin Uthaimin, Shaikh Ahmad an-Najmi and others. Shaikh Ibn Uthaimeen in his now published explanation of ‘Riyaadhus-Saaliheen’ well over fifteen years ago showed his clear abhorrence at the suicide bombings in Palestine. So this is the clarity with which the Salafis speak and have always spoken. Over a thousand years of Salafi authorship, from the time of the disciples of the Prophet until this day, the Scholars of Sunnah and Salafiyyah have been refuting the false ideologies, whether extremist or negligent - Whereas the people of deviation will respond based upon political expediency, but the underlying ideology in support of revolution and suicide attacks remains. How is it possible to be straddle both sides of the fence in this issue, whilst the Qur’aan and Sunnah is so clear upon them?
What is astonishing is that these same people accuse the Salafis, whom they call Wahhaabis, of being responsible for these false extremist ideologies. It reminds us of the lines of poetry: “She accused me of the illness she possessed, and then slipped way!”

SHAIKH ‘UBAID WARNS AGAINST CO-OPERATION WITH
MARKAZ JAM’IYAH AHLUL-HADITH UK
AND ITS HEAD ABDUL-HADI OMARI
Ash-Shaikh al-Allaamah ‘Ubaid al-Jaabiree stated:
“Know that I do not allow co-operation with any political or partisan jamaa’ah such as ‘Nadwatul-Mujaahideen’ of Kerala (in India), rather I warn against them, due to the fact that it is established with me that they are not upon the Sunnah. And from the political groups (al-jama’aat as-siyaasiyah) which I see should not be co-operated with or to come under their banner is the Jama’aah Ahlul-Hadith in Birmingham, Britain, whose head is ‘Abdul-Haadi al-’Omari - and the Jam’iyyatul-Irshaad in Indonesia, the one established by Ahmad Al-Sarkati…”

The foolish Zakir Naik states EVERY Muslim should be a terrorist and praises Usamah ibn Laden and rejects those who say that Ibn Laden is wrong.
This further proves that Zakir Naik’s ideology is in opposition to the way of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah. May Allaah protect the Muslims from him.
Zakir Naik says:
“So here the muslims are saying that Usaamah bin Laaden is either wrong. I reject them!”
“But if you ask my view… If He (Usaamah bin Laaden) is on the truth.. if he’s fighting the enemies of Islam. I’m for him.”
“If he’s terrorising the terrorists… if he’s terrorising America the terrorist… the biggest terrorist I am with him.”
“Every Muslim should be terrorist! The thing is that if he is terrorising the terrorist he is following islam.”

The Reply to Thirty Questions
Confirming that Zakir the Indian and People of His Ideology are Misguided Deviants
(Answered by Ash-Shaikh Yahyaa Al-Hajooree –
may Allaah preserve him)
Translated by Aqeel Walker
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful, the Giver of Mercy
All praise is due to Allaah, the Lord of all that exists. To proceed:
These are some of the well-known, published statements of the one who is called Zakir Naik, the Indian – may Allaah guide him – which we are presenting to the Shaikh, the ‘Allaamah, Abee ‘Abdir-Rahmaan Yahyaa bin ‘Alee Al-Hajooree Al-Yamaanee, for him to answer. And they are as follows:
The first question: Zakir Naik says, “You can call Allaah with any name at all, however it must be a name that is good and beautiful.”
[Translator’s note: This is my translation of the Arabic question. Please refer to the original statement of Zakir Naik, as it may not be exactly as I have translated it from Arabic but it has the same meaning. The brothers who are familiar with this man’s deviance most likely know the exact quote.]
The response of the Shaikh, may Allaah bless him:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful, the Giver of Mercy. All praise is due to Allaah. We praise Him, we seek His help, we seek His forgiveness, and we seek refuge with Him from the evils of our own selves, and our own wicked deeds. Whoever Allaah guides, there is none who can misguide him, and whoever He leads astray, there is none who can guide him. And I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah alone, who has no partner, and I testify that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger – may prayers of blessing and peace be upon him, and upon his family, in great abundance. Thus to proceed:
So this statement, which contains in it a permission for every person that he may name Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, with what Allaah did not name Himself; this contains a cruel mistreatment of Allaah, Glory be unto Him, the Most High, and it contains fabrication of a lie against Allaah, Glory be unto Him, the Most High. And it is a statement of falsehood that is not based upon anything from the Book (Al-Qur’aan), the Sunnah, or any consensus (Ijmaa’). And indeed I have already refuted the Sufi, ‘Umar bin Hafeedh in one of his statements that is similar to this statement, and that he would supplicate to Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, with names that were not confirmed (for Allaah). And here is the refutation so that we do not have to repeat what has been mentioned of evidences, and it is the refutation against this Zakir person (as well):
The Sufi ‘Umar bin Hafeedh said in his book “Khulaasat ul-Madad in-Nabawee fee Awraad Aali Baa’lawee”, pg 39, under the topic heading “Ad-Du’aa bi Asmaa’illaah il-Husnaa yaa Muqsit, yaa Naafi’, yaa Jaami’.”
The reply of Ash-Shaikh Yahyaa (hafidhahullaahu ta’aalaa):
Allaah, the Most High, says: “And unto Allaah belong the Most Beautiful Names, so call upon Him with them.” (Al-A’raaf:180)
So how can he call upon Allaah with names that are not confirmed for Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, like his saying, “O Naafi’,” etc.? And how can he name Allaah with that which Allaah has not named Himself, nor did His Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) call Him by these names. This is from the matter of speaking about Allaah without knowledge. And if we wanted to call ‘Umar bin Hafeedh by a name other than his name, he would not be pleased with that, and he would consider it mistreating him by us calling him by other than his name. So how can this person not be pleased with this for himself, yet he is pleased with that treatment for Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic?! And he, with this deed of his, has opposed the evidences, and the consensus of the Ummah (Muslim nation).
Al-Imaam Ash-Shaafi’ee (may Allaah have mercy upon him) said: “Allaah, the Most High, has Names and Attributes, which His Book (the Qur’aan) has come with, and His Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) has informed of. There is no room for anyone from the creatures of Allaah, the Most High, whom the proof has been established upon him, to refute (or deny) them.” (Thamm ut-Ta’weel, pg. 121)
And Al-Imaam Ahmad (may Allaah have mercy upon him) said about the Attributes: “And they are not known except by what Allaah described Himself with. So He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing. And those who describe him do not reach the full extent of his Attribute, and one is not to go beyond the Qur’aan and the Hadeeth (in describing Him). So we say just as He (Allaah) said, and we describe Him with what He used to describe Himself, and one is not to go beyond the Qur’aan.” (Al-Masaa’il war-Rasaa’il fil-‘Aqeedah, by Al-Imaam Ahmad, 1/277, and Ijtimaa’ ul-Juyoosh il-Islaamiyyah, pg. 83, and Al-Fataawaa, 5/26.)
And the Imaam of the Imaams, Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Ishaaq said: “So we, and all of the Salaf, from the people of the Hijaaz, and Tihaamah, and Al-Yemen, and Al-‘Iraaq, and Ash-Shaam, and Misr (Egypt), our Math-hab (way) is that we affirm for Allaah what he affirmed for Himself.” (At-Tawheed, by Ibn Khuzaymah, 1/26)
And Al-Imaam Abu Bakr Ahmad bin Ismaa’eel, who was known as Al-Ismaa’eelee, said: “And they believe that Allaah is called by His beautiful Names, and described by His Attributes, which His Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) named and described Him with.” (I’tiqaad A’imati Ahlil-Hadeeth, pg. 35)
And Al-Imaam Abu Nasr ‘Ubaydullaah bin Sa’eed As-Sijzee said: “And indeed the Imaams have agreed that the Attributes should only be taken as Tawqeefiyyah (restricted to the texts) and it is not permissible that Allaah be described except with what He described Himself, or with what His Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) described Him with.” (Ar-Radd ‘alaa man Ankar al-Harf was-Sawt, pg. 121)
Al-Imaam Ibn ‘Abdil-Barr said: “Ahlus-Sunnah are unanimously agreed in confirming the Attributes that are reported in the Book (Al-Qur’aan) and the Sunnah, and believing in them according to the literal meaning, and not as figurative meanings.” (At-Tamheed, 7/145, and Al-Fataawaa, 5/87).
And Abul-Qaasim Al-Qushayree said: “The Names are to be taken as Tawqeef (restricted) from the Book (Al-Qur’aan) and the Sunnah, and the Consensus (Ijmaa’).” (Al-Fath, 11/226)
And Abul-Hasan Al-Qaabisee said: “The Names of Allaah, and His Attributes are not known except by the Tawqeef (restrictive texts) from the Book (Al-Qur’aan) and the Sunnah, or the Consensus (Ijmaa’), and one is not to enter into them with analogy (Qiyaas).” (Al-Fath, 11/220)
And Ibn Mundah said: “And the Names of Allaah, and His Attributes are Tawqeefiyyah (restricted to the texts), and Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah do not affirm for Allaah anything but what He affirmed for Himself in His Book (Al-Qur’aan), or what has been authenticated from the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).” (At-Tawheed, by Ibn Mundah, 2/135).
And Ibn Hazm said: “So it is correct that it is not permissible that Allaah be named with any name except what He named Himself with.” (Al-Muhallaa, 8/31)
And Al-Imaam Al-Baghawee said: “The Names of Allaah, the Most High, are taken as Tawqeef (restricted to the texts of the Qur’aan and the Sunnah).” (Ma’aalim ut-Tanzeel, 3/307)
And As-Safaareenee said in Lawaami’ ul-Anwar:
“But they are in reality Tawqeefiyyah, We have with this proofs that are reliable.”
(These are two lines of poetry)
Then he explained that, so he said: “We have – O people of the Sunnah and following the Salaf – in considering the affirmation of Tawqeef (restriction) regarding the Names of Al-Baaree (Allaah), the Magnificent and Exalted, from the Legislator, reliable, lofty proofs, that fulfill the goal, because whatever is not confirmed from the Legislator, it should not be taken in unrestricted reliance upon it. And the basic principle (Asl) is prohibition (regarding issues of belief) until a proof of allowance is established. So if it is confirmed, then it is Tawqeefee (within the restriction of the texts).” (Lawaami’ ul-Anwar, 1/124-125)
And Shaikh ul-Islaam ibn Taymiyyah (may Allaah have mercy upon him) said: “And the conglomerate of statements regarding the affirmation of the Attributes is the statement that the Salaf of the Ummah were upon and its Imaams, and it is that Allaah is described by what He described Himself with, and by what His Messenger described Him with. And that is to be safeguarded from At-Tahreef (distortion of meaning), At-Tamtheel (likening with the creation), At-Takyeef (describing how they are), and At-Ta’teel (denial of them). ‘There is nothing like Him.’ (Ash-Shooraa:11) These (At-Tahreef, At-Tamtheel, At-Takyeef, and At-Ta’teel) are not to be applied to His Self, His Attributes, nor to His Actions.” This concludes what was wanted of his statement. (Majmoo’ ul-Fataawaa, 6/515)
And his student, Al-Imaam Ibn ul-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy upon him) said in the principles that he mentioned regarding the Attributes of Allaah: “The seventh is that whatever is used to refer to Him, and regarding the matter of the Names and Attributes, then this is Tawqeefee (restricted to the texts of the Qur’aan and the Sunnah).” (Badaa’i’ul-Fawaa’id, 1/162)
Based upon this, it is not permissible to affirm a name of Allaah, nor any attribute for Him, without an authentic proof conveyed from a textual evidence (i.e. the Qur’aan or authentic hadeeths). This is due to Allaah, the Most High’s, statement: “And unto Allaah belong the most beautiful Names, so call upon Him with them. And leave off those who deviate regarding His Names. They will be punished for what they used to do.” (Al-A’raaf:180)
And affirming Attributes of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, without an authentic evidence to support it, is considered speaking about Allaah without knowledge. And indeed Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, mentioned speaking about Allaah without knowledge along with the major Shirk (associating partners with Allaah). So He, the Most High, said: “Say (O Muhammad): ‘(But) the things that my Lord has indeed forbidden are Al-Fawâhish (great evil sins, every kind of unlawful sexual intercourse, etc.), whether committed openly or secretly, sins (of all kinds), unrighteous oppression, joining partners (in worship) with Allâh for which He has given no authority, and saying things about Allâh of which you have no knowledge.’” (Al-A’raaf:33)
And Allaah, the Most High, said: “And follow not (O man i.e., say not, or do not, or witness not, etc.) that of which you have no knowledge (e.g. one’s saying: ‘I have seen,’ while in fact he has not seen, or ‘I have heard,’ while he has not heard). Verily! The hearing, and the sight, and the heart, of each of those you will be questioned (by Allâh).” (Al-Israa:36)
And the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) used to say, “I seek refuge with You, from You. I cannot enumerate the praises upon You. You are just as You have praised Yourself.”
This is the conclusion of the first question posed to Shaikh Yahyaa Al-Hajooree regarding Zakir Naik.

ELECTIONS ARE A BID’AH, STATES SHAIKH UBAID
Below is very current, relevant and important question put to Shaikh Ubaid Al-Jaabiree. An elder and senior Scholar from the Scholars of Saudi Arabia.
Question: “Is it permissible for the Muslims in the lands of disbelief to enter into elections and request from the Muslims to support them in this from the aspect [of being] from the lesser of the two evils or to repel the greater evil?”
Answer: I say: Elections are not from the Sunnah (the way of the Prophet) that is known by the Muslims and that which the Salaf traversed upon from the time of the Companions and the Imaams of the Tabi’een, and those who came after them. But rather it is a newly invented matter in Islam, so it is a Bid’ah (innovation), and if it is a Bid’ah (innovation) then it is Muharram (impermissible). But if the Muslims in the West or other than it are compelled to enter into elections then there are a number of circumstances [to be present]. From them: That they will not receive any of their rights that are legislated in their country except by way of a representative to speak on their behalf. So if they are forced to do this and they have no choice, they either elect a man who is Muslim or lose their rights and have no one to hear their concerns. In this situation they elect a righteous man who is wise that will benefit the Muslims and look after their rights**.
But if the Muslims were patient upon the hardships and loss of their rights in the way of abandoning this innovated matter it is better for them and more desirable. And Allah knows best.
Translated by: Abul-Hasan Maalik Al-Akhdar (Philidelphia, USA).
————————-
** [Translator:] It should be noted here that the Muslims in the U.S. and U.K receive the same rights as other non-Muslim citizens. They build mosques, schools, and open centers of propagation without hindrance or opposition. Muslims openly call to Islam in publications, radio broadcasts, the internet, and in public forums whether on university campuses or in correctional facilities, in fact Islam is still the fastest growing religion in the West.
Muslim women can be seen on the streets of many cities in full hijab and Muslim men in Islamic garb and full beards, all of this with no obstruction from the authorities. All of these rights are afforded them without need of entering elections or voting.
From:
http://www.salafitalk.net/st/viewmessages.cfm?forum=9&topic=5880
The Messenger of Allaah, may the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him, stated:
“Indeed every newly invented matter [in Religion] is an innovation (bid’ah), and EVERY innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance in the Fire.”
and, he stated:
“Whoever innovates into this affair of ours [i.e. Islaam], that which is not from it, will have it rejected.”
SUHAIB HASAN ONCE AGAIN OPPOSES
Can an innovation be good? According to Suhaib Hasan of the ‘Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith, UK’, maybe yes. He states,
“…I have said many times that Muslims should participate in elections. IT IS A GOOD SYSTEM.”
So which scholar of Salafiyyah did he get this from, and which textual proof? Or has he innovated into Islaam that which is not from it? There is huge difference between a scholar stating that electoral voting is ‘a lesser of two evils’, and this erroneous statement that elections are a ‘good system’. When some scholars say that voting it is a lesser of two evils, then surely, every intellegent muslim can see that a lesser of two evils still means that it is evil! So how has this evil (whether lesser or greater), now been ‘re-packaged’ as good and permissible?!
And those who claim, falsely, that Suhaib Hasan has the right of ijtihaad, do not realise that ijtihaad is not a license to innovate and oppose the major scholars, and the Salafi manhaj, and to make halaal that which is haraam, and haraam that which is halaal!
Read on:
“From amongst those who regularly legitimise participation in the elections around the time of local and national elections in the UK, is Dr. Suhaib Hasan, the senior Imaam at Masjid Al-Tawhid in Leyton (North-East London). Whilst Dr. Hasan convinces the people to vote from the pulpit (minbar), there is almost always a representative of one of the major political parties standing outside giving out leaflets for his/her cause, with his/her presence being sanctioned by Masjid Al-Tawhid.
It gets worse.
After the recent ‘Undercover Mosques’ documentary by Channel 4’s dispatches (which showed Dr. Suhaib Hasan as being a ‘preacher of hate’), an article from the local Waltham Forest Guardian has now been pinned up on the Masjid’s notice board near the entrance. Here’s a part of the article:
‘Shaykh Hassan says, however, that his remarks were taken out of context, and that he has never said Sharia law would be appropriate for Britain.
“Britain is a democracy, and I have said many times that Muslims should participate in elections. It is a good system” he said.
“Why blame a western country for not implementing Sharia law when Muslim states like Pakistan do not?”’
This article is from the 25th January and it was still up in the Masjid yesterday (Friday 16th February). For those who are not convinced and perhaps feel that this is some extremist plot to bring down this so-called ‘great scholar’, here is the link to the newspapers story:
http://www.guardian-series.co.uk/archive/display.var.1146248.0.mosque_disputes_claim.php
The fact that the article was put up in the first place and that it is still there, is a proof that these are indeed the words of Dr. Suhaib Hasan (as the notice board is heavily vetted) and that it’s not another case of media lies…”

Some individuals have wrongly assumed that the point of contention over the issue of elections between the “Markazi Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith UK” and others is based upon a difference of opinion between the Scholars. Nothing could be further from from truth. Our contention is: 1. that the Jamiat holds that democratic elections are supported by Islaam and the sharee’ah, 2. that the one who does not vote is sinful and responsible for any resulting evil, and, 3. the sinful innovations they themselves fall into due to their involvement in the political arena. These false principles of the Jamiat are in contradiction to Islaam and not supported by any textual proofs, nor from the way of the Salaf, nor supported by the Scholars of Islaam.
As for certain Scholars that hold that voting is permitted as a lesser of evils, then that is an ijtihaad that is held to be erroneous by other Scholars who bring strong textual and reasoned arguments, and we hope to make those clear some time in the future, inshaa’Allaah. Recently some erroneous people have began to say that the Jamiat is supported in its positions on elections by some scholars. And this statement of their’s is untrue and unfounded, rather NO Salafi scholar has stated that democratic elections are supported by the Sharee’ah, nor that one is sinful or “carries the burden of any resulting sufferring” if he does not vote.
Shaikh Al-Albaanee (rahimmahullaah) stated:
“However, if the situation is contrary to this, and this is what I think the question is referring to, then one of them must be selected due to the electoral process established today. It is upon you to know that this system is not Islamic in any way whatsoever.. ” (Silsilatul Hudaa wan-Noor, Tape 284)
Let us repeat the statement of Shaikh Al-Albaanee:
“It is upon you to know that this system is not Islamic in any way whatsoever”!
Now let us mention the statement of Abdul-Haadee Omaree, one of the heads of the “Markazi Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith UK”:
“The act of taking part in elections is an activity that is in fact supported by the Sharee’ah (the Islamic Legislation)…” (Source: ‘The Dawn’, Title: ‘On the Eve of Election’ by Dr. Naseem, Salma Yaqoob & Imam Abdul Hadi. The Newsletter of the Birmingham Central Mosque Trust Ltd, June 2004 /Rabbi al-Thani 1425 AH, Issue 164)
So Al-Albaanee holds democratic elections to be against Islaam and the Jamiat holds democratic elections to be from Islaam. So how can it ever be undertood that the Jamiat is in agreement with Shaikh Al-Albaanee?
And let us not confuse the ijtihaad of Shaikh Al-Albaanee (rahimahullaah) with the deviations of the Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith UK, and thereby claim that Jamiat was correct AND following the scholars. Look at the base principle of Shaikh Al-Albaanee in stating the Islamic position on democatric elections and the base principle of the Ahle-hadith UK in which they make it binding to vote and regard the one who does not vote to be sinful. Abdul-Haadi Omari of the Jamiat said:
“If one chooses not to participate due to ignorance and someone of a corrupt and immoral background is elected then the burden of any resulting suffering and injustice will be upon those who refused to use their vote.” (Source: ‘The Dawn’, Title: ‘On the Eve of Election’ by Dr. Naseem, Salma Yaqoob & Imam Abdul Hadi. The Newsletter of the Birmingham Central Mosque Trust Ltd, June 2004 /Rabbi al-Thani 1425 AH, Issue 164)
The Shaikh Muhammad al-Imaam of Yemen (from the senior students of Al-Allaamah Muqbil ibn Haadee) states in complete opposition to Abdul-Hadi Omari and the Jamiat:
“And it does not suffice the opposer [of the Sunnah] with claiming that Elections are merely permissible, but rather he increases the ‘clay with more water’ (i.e. that he makes the affair worse), so he says: “They [elections] are obligatory [to enter into] and the one who does not [enter into them] is sinful and a transgressing wrong-doer and that he has not fulfilled his trust or responsibility.. and so on.”
So who is the one who claims that the Jamiat ahl-e-Hadith based their rulings and opinions on the verdicts of the Scholars?! Indeed they based their rulings on desires and whims, thinking themselves to be Muftis and Imaams! And possibly the greatest scholar of Pakistan and India in last century or two, Allaamah Badee’ Ud-Deen (rahimahullaah) rebuked them and censured them severely, in his own words when he said:
“In this manner, some of our brothers (of Jamiat AhleHadith) have accepted democracy and have mistaken it for Islaam. It is astonishing how they have accepted a western ideology while being AhleHadeeth. Did the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) give us this ideology, did the rightly guided Khulafaa give us this ideology, or did the four Imaams give us this ideology? Who gave us this ideology? An ideology emerged from Europe and you accepted, you deemed the ideology of the Messenger sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam deficient! Let me ask you one question. Are there any opposing political parties in the Sharee’ah. If the government was established for the sake of Allaah, and someone stood in opposition of it, what would become of him? There would be hostility everywhere. Democracy safeguards these hostilities, and this is why evil is given a chance to exist. It is for this reason that these people who are starving for power attempt to win power and fight (amongst each other).
Has Islaam not taught you how to run the governments? Did not the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) establish an Islaamic government within a kingdom of kufr? How did the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam), how did he establish this government? He acted upon the guidance of Allaah and he was successful, Allaah gave him victory, Allaah gave him success. All forces were in opposition to the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) and they still are; the forces of these selfish maulvis (religious leaders), the forces of saints (peers), and the forces of the wealthy. All of these groups are against each other but are united against the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam). The time came when the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) was given victory, and he announced on the hill of Safaa, “There is none worthy of worship except Allaah alone, and He aided His salve, and completed His promise, and He by Himself defeated the forces. This is Islaam, and this is our methodology, and this is our Imaam.
How is it that we accept those things that he (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) cursed, and we accept the methodology of the enemies of the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam)??
Today, there is a group that claims that they are from the upholders of the religion, and they used to claim at one time that it was impermissible to partake and run in elections. Later, they claimed that all of these things are necessary and permissible if we want to gain power, so they began to partake in all of these things that these worldly (political) parties partake in. The people of the Jam’eeyah (AhleHadeeth) began to walk in their footsteps.
This is what taqleed is, acting upon the correct and incorrect actions of your Imaam; they do not separate, take what is correct and what is incorrect, this is the Muqallid. When these people (who partake in elections) received the fatwa that these action are impermissable, none of them objected, even though it is necessary that one of the two is incorrect.
An ideology in which an individual who seeks leadership stands in elections, and they divide into groups and parties, and they severely waste the wealth of the Muslims on backbiting and mud-slinging, how can an ideology such as this be correct?
So my brothers, this methodology in not found in the Quraan and the Sunnah…”
Shaikh Al-Albaanee after stating the evils of democratic elections and voting, then states it may be the lesser of two evils. He said:
“I say yes, because the Muslims in this case are between two evils. Similarly, this is the case if the candidates were Muslims, since amongst the Muslims are Communists, Baathists and so on. Okay, do we just sit back and watch or should we choose the one whose harm is less?” (Silsilatul-Hudaa wan-Noor, Tape 284)
So where is the comparison between the statement of this Imaam and Muhaddith and statement of the Markazi Jamiat Ahle-Hadith, as forwarded by the ‘mufti’ and ’scholar’ of the Jamiat, Abdul-Haadee Omari, who does not regard democratic elections to be wrong and in opposition to Islam, but rather supported by Islaam! The Jamiat Ahle-Hadith then proceeds to enact its own deviated opinions which are NOT supported by the scholars, by falling head-long into the following:
1. Inviting socialists and communists to their mosques to deliver lectures.
2. Attending photo opportunities with politicians, even those who support suicide bombings in Iraaq and Palestine!
3. Free-mixing with females.
4. Attending rallies, protests, and anti-government street demonstrations, and encouranging all those who attend their mosques to do so.
5. Giving fatwas containing lies upon Islaam, such as praise of the grave-worshippers and innovators.
6. Organising gatherings and inviting innovators (such Jihadists, Soofees, partisans, secularists), politicians, other faith leaders to address their congegrations.
7. Attending innovated celebrations of the Soofees along with the politicians, such as the Prophet’s Birthday!

So do you see all this in the ijtihaad and fatwa of Shaikh Al-Albaanee or Shaikh Ibn Baaz regarding voting?! Never, may Allaah’s mercy be upon them both.
And let us look again at the clear statement of Al-Imaam al-Muhaddith Shaikhul-Islaam Al-Albaanee, so we are not deceived by those who claim that the Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith and its wretched sister from Kuwait, Jamiat Ihyaa Turaath are upon the position of Shaykh Al-Albaanee:
QUESTIONER: “We have heard that you said - O Shaikh - that it is permissible to enter into Parliamentary Elections, but with conditions?!”
SHAYKH AL-ALBAANEE: “NO IT IS NOT PERMISSIBLE! These conditions - when there are any - are purely theoretical and speculative, and not knowledge-based. So do you remember the conditions that I stated?”
QUESTIONER: “The first is that a person must protect his ownself (i.e. protect his religion).”
SHAYKH AL-ALBAANEE: “And is this possible?”
QUESTIONER: “I have never done it [so I would not know].”
SHAYKH AL-ALBAANEE: “And if Allaah wills you will NEVER do it! It is not possible to meet these conditions. And if we observe many of the people who at the beginning of their lives - we could see from their appearance, from their clothes, from their beards - and then when they entered Parliament, then their appearance changed! And after that they started justifying it… And likewise we would see people entering the Parliament with Islamic Arabic clothing and the after some days, they changed their clothing!! So is this an evidence and indication of corruption or rectification?!”
QUESTIONER: “Shaikh, I mean the brothers in Algeria, and their work there and their entry into the poloitical arena?”
SHAYKH AL-ALBAANEE: “WE DO NOT ADVISE THIS! We do not advise political work these days in any of the Islamic countries…”
(Tape: “Silsilatul-Hudaa wan-Noor” (1/352))
So the fact is and still remains that the Markazi Jamiat Ahle-Hadith have NEVER been upon the positions of the scholars in these affairs nor have they previously claimed that. The Jamiat invents it’s own political fatwas and policies, and to claim otherwise now is an insult to those great scholars, may Allaah’s mercy be upon them. The fatawa of the Scholars do not and never have supported the political activities of the Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith. Indeed, it is apparently clear that Abdul-Hadi Omari takes his political ideology from Abdur-Rahmaan Abdul-Khaaliq, whose methodology he translated over a decade ago.
